City of San Marcos and San Elijo Hills officials will gather on Wednesday, Dec. 10 at 9 am to break ground on the new 200-acre Double Peak Park and Open Space Area, located off of San Elijo Road and Double Peak Drive. The park will provide access to the largest public open space area in San Marcos when completed in the Summer of 2009. Amenities will include several observation areas, a natural amphitheater, interpretive kiosks, adventure play equipment, shade structure, picnic tables, a caretaker’s residence, restrooms and parking. Trails connecting with the Ridgeline Trail and Discovery Lake will also be part of the park development.

“Double Peak Park will soon become a regional attraction,” said Community Services Director Craig Sargent-Beach. “Not only are the views from this park phenomenal, but the amenities provide something for everyone to enjoy.” Double Peak Park is one of five new parks being added by the City in an ambitious effort to provide five acres of parkland for every 1,000 San Marcos residents. Double Peak Park’s construction is being funded through a development agreement with San Elijo Hills Corporation. The City will be contributing some of the recreational amenities such as the shaded picnic area, the adventure play equipment and the interpretive kiosks.
