Property Manger Has Not Repaid Deposit, Couple Says

(Queshaven Road Area of SEH) — Several local couples told 10News that they are losing the location and deposits for their wedding ceremonies. The couples said they had planned their weddings on an estate located just south of San Marcos, but the owner of the property told them he has been shut down. After two years of dating, Josh Rubin and Jeanne Cuevas decided to get married and thought they had found the perfect place to do it. However, one week before the wedding, the couple was given bad news by the property manager.

“And I said, how am I supposed to tell my fiance that? We’re getting married in 7 to 8 days. We’ve been planning this for a year. We’ve got people coming in, caterers, all this stuff, so it’s kind of a shock,” said Rubin. What was even more shocking to the couple was being told that their $2,000 deposit they paid about one year ago was not available to be paid back.

“I don’t have a great deal of money, but I definitely want to work with the brides and the grooms and try and make things right for them,” said property owner Steve Pike. Pike owns the nine-acre property and has been renting it out for weddings for about a year and a half.

Last October, the county began receiving complaints from neighbors that Pike was operating a wedding business illegally. The county warned Pike to either obtain a permit or stop operating, but he did neither.
