Mayor Jim Desmond to deliver State of the City Address

Mayor Jim Desmond will deliver the 2012 San Marcos State of the City Address on Tuesday, February 28 during a luncheon at Williams Barn at Walnut Grove Park, 1950 Sycamore Drive. The lunch will begin at 11:30 am and the Mayor’s address will start at 12:30 pm. Four community heroes will also be honored during the event. Community heroes are selected each year by council members and honored for their contributions to San Marcos.

Tickets are available for $25 per person by calling the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce at (760) 744-1270. Corporate sponsorships are also available through the chamber.

This year’s theme is “Honoring Our Vibrant Heritage. Celebrating Our New Horizons.” Mayor Desmond will touch on the accomplishments in the community over the past five years and will present the city’s vision for the future in the areas of public safety, parks and community services, community development, traffic and transportation, and other quality of life issues.

The Mayor’s State of the City Address will air on San Marcos TV Channel 19 (Cox Communications), Channel 24 (Time Warner Cable) and Channel 99 (AT&T) during the month of March on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 9 am and 6 pm, and Saturdays and Sundays at 11 am and 3 pm. It will also be available on the city’s web site.

The event is being co-hosted by the City of San Marcos and the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce.

VDEF Annual Fundraiser
When a SEES parent writes a check to VDEF-SEES, VDEF stands for Valley of Discovery Education Foundation. VDEF serves as our not-for profit entity as it does for several schools throughout SMUSD. On Saturday, January 28th at 7:00 pm VDEF will hold its annual fundraiser to raise money for its beneficiary schools and its general operating expenses. This year the theme is “Discover the Taste” and will include an evening of tasting fine wines from around the world, hosted by PRP Wine International. There will also an olive oil taste and Pitch Michael will perform music. It’s a fun community event where lots of local supporters of education come together. San Marcos City Council plans to refinance bonds to save taxpayers more than $1 million

The San Marcos City Council approved a resolution last night giving staff the green light to refinance bonds for Community Facilities District (CFD) 88-1. By refinancing the $22.59 million of outstanding bonds from 5.8 percent to approximately 4 percent, taxpayers in the Santa Fe Hills area of San Marcos could save an estimated $1.2 million in tax payments over the next 16 years.

Community Facilities Districts, or Mello-Roos as they are more commonly known, help finance local public facilities and services like law enforcement, fire, landscaping, lighting and other community services. Cities often consider refinancing these long-term bonds if market conditions are favorable enough to save taxpayers money, something San Marcos has done at least a half a dozen times over the past 20 years to capture similar savings.

The city oversees several CFDs; however, CFD 88-1 would be the only bond refinanced under this action. About 1,749 residential units would experience an annual special tax savings ranging anywhere from $50 to $145. This estimate could change given market conditions when the bonds have actually been priced and sold.

“This move will bring real savings to many San Marcos taxpayers,” explained City Manager Paul Malone. “And in this economy, every little bit helps.”

Traffic alert for Twin Oaks Valley Road in San Marcos

Twin Oaks Valley Road from South Village Drive to North Village Drive will be narrowed to one lane in both directions from January 23 through February 3. The lane closure will only happen on weekdays (Monday through Friday) from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. The lane closures are necessary to repair storm drain facilities and make associated road repairs.

Some minor traffic delays are anticipated and motorists are encouraged to use an alternate route if possible.
