Sounds like some investigation of Logan Jenkins of the San Diego Union Tribune; brings into question the data used in U.S. News & World Report that ranked San Marcos High School as the 3rd best high school in California and 11th nationwide.

Logan Jenkins of the San Diego Union Tribune Writes:

The ranking is too good to be true because, well, it’s not based on accurate information. U.S. News & World Report consulted a federal database that blew a couple of key facts about the local high school. First of all, the senior class was tabulated at 79, which is pretty weird since the junior class had 818 students. According to Kevin Holt, San Marcos superintendent, the 897 total for the two classes combined is correct but the breakdown is way out of whack. READ San Diego UT Article

A San Elijo Hills resident has reported a mountain lion sighting today in San Elijo Hills around 4:15 AM Monday.

Resident writes:

I spotted an adult mountain lion at 4:15 this morning while running on San Elijo Rd towards Rancho Santa Fe. After passing the gas station, the animal crossed from my right, approximately 15 feet in front of me and ran across San Elijo Road towards a dirt path near the condos by Albertson’s.

The following safety tips are provided by the California Department of Fish and Game. They are based on studies of mountain behavior and analysis of attacks by mountain lions.

Don’t hike alone.

Go in groups, with adults supervising children an keep children close to you.

Observations of captured mountain lions reveal that the animals seem especially drawn to children.

Keep children within your sight at all times.

Don’t approach a lion.

Most mountain lions will try to avoid a confrontation.

Give them a way to escape.

Don’t run from a lion.

Running stimulates a mountain lion’s instinct to chase.

Instead, stand and face the animal. Make eye contact.

If you have small children with you, pick them up if possible so that they don’t panic and run.

Although it may be awkward, pick them up without bending over or turning away from the lion.

Don’t crouch or bend over.

A squatting or bending person looks a lot like a four-legged prey animal.

Do all you can to appear larger.

Raise your arms.

Open your jacket if you are wearing one.

Throw stones, branches or whatever you can reach without crouching or turning your back.

Wave your arms slowly and speak firmly in a loud voice.

Fight back if attacked. Some hikers have fought back successfully with sticks, caps, jackets, garden tools and their bare hands.

Since a mountain lion usually tries to bite the head or neck, try to remain standing and face the attacking animal.

For more information about mountain lions, contact the Department of Fish and Game (DFG), case of emergency call 911 and DFG at 916-445-0045

A NEW “Orientation Session” has been added and is filling fast: May 17th at 6:00 p.m.

Construction is moving along rapidly and is ahead of schedule for opening in September!

Following the several orientation sessions held so far, enrollment is growing steadily and classes are filling at Pacific Preschool & Kindergarten, a private Early Education Program opening in San Elijo Hills in September 2012. Established in 1990, San Elijo Hills will be the school’s third campus, joining two other locations in South Orange County.

A year-round PreSchool and Kindergarten program, ages 18 months through Kindergarten

Eight individual classrooms surrounding a large multi-purpose room, a kitchen/staff area and two beautiful outside play areas

Accredited by theNationalAcademyfor the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), a distinction earned by only 8 percent of preschools nationwide

Teachers have a bachelor’s degree and/or a California Department of Education teaching permit

“Pacific PreSchool & Kindergarten is focused on ‘kindergarten readiness’ – developing the physical, social, emotional and intellectual skills children need to succeed in school” shares owner/educator/director Lynda Way.
