SAN MARCOS – Fires driven by Santa Ana winds are just like hurricanes and tornadoes – natural disasters that can’t be stopped, San Marcos Fire Chief Todd Newman told about 30 people at a gathering yesterday.

But what people who live in wildfire-prone areas can do is learn how to prepare for them, Newman said. Residents should maintain a buffer zone between vegetation and their homes, build with noncombustible materials, and have good access paths for evacuation, Newman said.
