Makeover for San Marcos school district detailed

Board will pare down $628 million project list

In an ideal world, the San Marcos Unified School District already would have the $628 million it would need to complete a long list of modernization projects.

That’s what district officials estimate it will cost, with inflation, to rebuild San Marcos High School, upgrade the district’s older schools to the same standards as its newest ones and add buildings on various campuses. The modernization plan is a broad overview of future needs, based on a report by LPA Inc., a firm the district hired for $260,000 to assess the conditions of its facilities and what it would take to modernize them. School board members listened to the presentation at their Oct. 28 meeting but didn’t make any decisions. Those will come in the months ahead as the board trims the list and prepares a financial plan for projects that remain.
