A new one-acre park near the San Marcos Civic Center will open to the public after an official ceremony on Wednesday, Sept. 22 at 3:30 pm. The park is located east of the Civic Center campus, 1 Civic Center Drive. Free parking is available in the nearby structure. The grand opening ceremony is open to the public and will include comments from the San Marcos City Council.

The $836,000 park was removed in 2004 during construction of North County Transit District‘s Sprinter line. The transit district funded approximately $638,000 for replacement park costs, and the City of San Marcos picked up the remaining $198,000.

Civic Center Park will be open from 8 am to 9 pm and includes amenities such as a lighted basketball half-court, sand volleyball, play equipment and picnic areas. The Inland Rail Trail also runs through the park.

“We are excited to expand our outdoor recreational offerings near the Civic Center,” explained Community Services Director Craig Sargent-Beach. “Many of our youth programs utilized the park before it was removed, and now we’ll be able to reinstate that outdoor component.”

The City contracted with Wimmer Yamada & Caughey for the project design and Empire Pipeline for project construction.
