Race Ends at 1,631-foot Double Peak Park

Highest Point in Coastal North County

SAN MARCOS, CALIF. — The first-ever San Elijo Hills Individual Uphill Time Trial July 17 will test the endurance of cyclists on a three-mile course that rises 1,000 feet and finishes at the 1,631-foot-high Cerro de las Posas at Double Peak Park, offering spectacular views of the Pacific coastline from Mexico to Dana Point.

“The San Elijo Hills race, scheduled to coincide with the excitement of the Tour de France, will be a challenging ride for intermediate to experienced riders,” said Mark McLeod, race sponsor, of New Version Sports. “It will be a ideal challenge for cyclists who are serious about riding and would like to establish a professionally monitored time that they can work to improve,” he said, noting that elite riders might complete the course in as little as 20 minutes.

The race will start at 8 a.m. at San Elijo Elementary School, 1600 School House Way at San Elijo Road, where riders will be outfitted with a timing chip and take off one-at-a-time to provide absolute accuracy.

To safeguard participants and fans, the course will feature lanes closed to traffic, traffic control by the San Diego Sheriff’s Department and on-site medical personnel.

McLeod expects approximately 300 bicyclists — many from local clubs — to participate and invites spectators to line the course.

“Uphill riders really benefit from the cheers of the crowd,” he said, adding that this is one of the only uphill time trials in the United States, although it is more common in Europe.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to San Elijo Elementary and Middle schools.  Other sponsors include Albertsons, www.SanElijoLife.com, Hometown Realty, and San Elijo Development Company.

Information and registration for the San Elijo Hills Time Trail is available at newversionsports.com or by calling (760) 470-2139.  Registration is $40.
