Motorists are advised to use caution and expect some delays around the intersection of Nordahl Road and Montiel Road from Oct. 29 to Oct. 30 as City of San Marcos and Caltrans crews work to complete road work and signal upgrades in the area in an effort to improve traffic circulation of this area.

The work schedule is as follows:

Monday, October 29, 2012 from 5:30 am to 3:30 pm
Expect lane closures and delays on Montiel Road east and west of Nordahl for slurry seal operation. Traffic will be maintained in all directions.

Monday, October 29, 2012 from 9 pm to 6 am
Expect lane closures and delays on Nordahl Road and Montiel Road for striping operation. Traffic will be maintained in all directions.

Tuesday, October 30, 2012 from 9 am to 3:30 pm
The new traffic signal (200 feet north of Montiel Road) at Nordahl Marketplace will be energized. This traffic signal will be the main entrance to Nordahl Marketplace. Nordahl Marketplace traffic will be detoured to Center Drive during this operation. Northbound and westbound traffic will no longer (permanently) be able to enter the Nordahl Marketplace at Montiel Road.

This area has been under construction for the last several months as part of a joint effort between Caltrans and the cities of San Marcos and Escondido to improve traffic congestion in the area. More than $11 million is invested in the projects, which are slated to be completed by mid November and just in time for the holiday shopping season.

The most significant improvement has been the replacement of the Nordahl Road Bridge and ramp improvements that will increase overall vehicle capacity and accommodate for future widening of the SR-78. Enhancements to the intersection of Nordahl and Montiel roads will work in conjunction with the new bridge to smooth traffic flow.

Eastbound auxiliary lanes on SR-78 will be completed in Spring 2013 to help uncork the bottleneck during peak commute times.
