Traffic detection loops will be replaced near the San Elijo Town Center from Monday, Feb. 21 through Friday, Feb. 25. Work will be done from 9 am to 3 pm except on Presidents Day when work will be done from 7 am to 4:30 pm. The loops will be installed at the four intersections of San Elijo Rd and Elfin Forest East and West, and also at Stephanie Street.
Traffic detection loops are installed to help communicate the presence of vehicles to traffic signals. That information is then used to help manage signal timing.
The existing video detection cameras have recently been failing in operation along San Elijo Road. The new loop detectors will enable signalized intersections to operate more efficiently and improve traffic flow on San Elijo Road.
I’ve seen the ones at the top of the hill on SER/TOVR do some weird things at times that make me think the cameras are blinded by the setting sun, but I haven’t run into problems in the square. Then again, I don’t often use Elfin Forest.
I’m sad to see the loops go in. The cameras work far better for motorcycles, in my experience.
