When in drought, call the Girl Scouts

San Marcos, CA – Armed with a mission and a timely message, Girl Scout Brownies from Troop 1165 will go door-to-door in San Marcos on Sunday, December 28 to remind residents to “save water every day, every way.” The troop volunteered to pass out informational pamphlets and speak to residents about water conservation as part of the Vallecitos Water District’s (District’s) drought outreach campaign.

Their message comes at a crucial time as the District continues to mitigate the effects of the current state-wide drought and gears up for potential challenges in the year ahead. Residents are being asked to use every opportunity to decrease water consumption and prepare for the likelihood of reduced water supplies in 2015.

The 6- and 7-year-old Girl Scouts, who visited the District to receive background information on the need to conserve water, plan to distribute more than 200 packets. The girls will be asking residents to adhere to the District’s mandatory water-use restrictions. They will also provide tips on how to save water and information on rebate programs for water efficient devices.

The Girl Scouts and their troop leaders hope their advocacy efforts will move people to conserve now and in the future. After their community service, they each will receive a special Vallecitos Water District patch for their uniform and will be recognized by the Board of Directors at a future board meeting. Their outreach efforts also satisfy the requirements for the WOW! Wonders of Water Journey, a Girl Scout leadership program where girls actively discover a topic, connect with others and take action in their community.
