San Marcos officials expect increased traffic congestion near Palomar College and Cal State San Marcos on Friday, May 20 and Saturday, May 21 since both colleges are hosting commencement ceremonies on their campuses.

Palomar College’s commencement will be held on Friday, May 20 at 5 pm on its football practice field. The event is slated to last 90 minutes. An estimated 1,900 students are expected to receive associates in arts degrees, and an estimated 1,200 students are expected to receive certificates of achievement. The college expects about 4,000 people to attend the event.

Cal State San Marcos will host three ceremonies on its Mangrum Track and Field, accommodating up to 8,000 guests at each event. The three ceremonies will be held on Friday, May 20 at 3 pm; Saturday, May 21 at 9 am and 2 pm. Each ceremony will last about two-and-a-half hours. More than 2,300 students are expected to receive degrees over the two days.

Traffic congestion and backups should be anticipated in the areas surrounding both campuses, and motorists are advised to avoid the areas if possible.

The City of San Marcos, CSUSM Police, Palomar College Police and the San Diego Sheriff’s Department are working together to help minimize traffic impacts. Law enforcement will be on-site to help direct traffic flow.
