The popular Mission Sports Park in San Marcos will reopen on Thursday, Oct. 14 with four additional fields and several other new amenities. The park, located at 931 Bailey Court, underwent a $3.5 million upgrade and expansion over the past year and now has a total of eight fields.

In addition to the four new fields, which include new artificial turf infields, the park features new batting and pitching cages; new electronic scoreboards; new foul ball poles; a new enclosed and shaded tot lot; new dugout shade structures; and new shaded group picnic areas.

Existing restrooms and concession buildings were refurbished and new restroom and storage buildings were added. Additional parking spaces were also added, and an agreement with Vallecitos Water District was established to use their lot for overflow parking. A new pedestrian entrance to the park from Armorlite Road was created. A new monument entry sign and baseball bollards round out the upgrades at the park.

“We have seen an incredible surge in youth baseball here in San Marcos since this park originally opened a decade ago,” explained Community Services Director Craig Sargent-Beach. “The added fields and new amenities satisfy a strong need in the community for more ball fields.”

A grand opening ceremony is slated for 4 pm on Oct. 14 and is open to the public. The ceremony will include comments from the San Marcos City Council and members of the San Marcos Youth Baseball League. The first pitch will be thrown by Mayor Jim Desmond, signaling the park’s official opening.
