Last week, the City of San Marcos held a public workshop to discuss the potential removal of some lodgepole fencing along North Twin Oaks Valley Road between Windy Way and Twin Oaks Valley Elementary School.

The fencing that is adjacent to the roadway poses a safety hazard to vehicular traffic while providing no protection to pedestrians or other trail users. There have been multiple incidents within the City, along the higher speed sections of Twin Oaks Valley Road and San Elijo Road, where vehicles that have left the travelled way have been impaled by the horizontal railing of the lodgepole fencing.

Residents at the workshop requested the city replace the offending horizontal lodgepoles with heavy-duty rope and leave the vertical poles in place. Staff has researched the suggestion and will recommend this replacement approach to the City Council at its meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 6 pm. The meeting is open to the public and will be held at City Hall, 1 Civic Center Drive.
