Eucalyptus Trees: San Elijo Hills “City” Park

A cluster of “volunteer” Eucalyptus trees will be removed on Friday, May 6th, in the San Elijo Hills Park between the lower and upper softball fields.

The trees are located in an easement for the San Diego County Water Authority, and currently sit on top of two pipelines. In addition to limiting access to the pipes, the trees are beginning to arc creating a health and safety issue.

The San Elijo Hills Park is not owned or maintained by the San Elijo Hills Community Association.

City of San Marcos, CA: Stage two drought alert in effect for San Diego County

City of San Marcos splash pads will temporarily close to conserve water

As a result of worsening drought conditions and Governor Edmund G. Brown’s statewide drought relief measures, the San Diego County Water Authority has declared a Level  drought alert prompting mandatory conservation measures to prevent water waste.

In order to comply with these state restrictions, the City of San Marcos will be closing splash pad water features at City parks beginning Friday, August 1 and will remain closed until drought conditions improve.

Parks affected by the splash pad closures include:

  • Sunset Park
  • San Elijo Park
  • Buelow Park
  • Mulberry Park
  • Lakeside Park

By closing the splash pads, the City anticipates saving between 8,100- and 12,150- gallons of water per day.

To further conservation efforts, the City is adjusting irrigation schedules and cutting back on watering in all San Marcos parks and other landscaped public spaces like center medians, street parkways and trails, and City Hall water fountain features.

The City’s public works department continued its water saving efforts by installing nearly 1,400 new rotator nozzles in turf areas and medians. Five new SMART controllers covering 7.5 acres were also installed to make real-time adjustments based on weather information to avoid water waste.

The Vallecitos Water District Board of Directors will be voting August 6 to move Vallecitos customers into a Level 2 Drought Alert as well.

For more information about the level 2 drought alert and mandatory conservation measures, please visit www.sdcwa.org/drought-response.

San Elijo Hills Park’s playground to reopen with new play structures

On Tuesday, June 4, the San Elijo Hills Park will reopen its playground with brand new play equipment that has been under construction since May 6.

The new equipment will include two jungle gyms designed to mimic the appearance of actual jungles: one for ages two to five, and another one for ages five to 12. The structures include a spinner bucket, grip climber, rock climber and more. There will also be a brand new sandbox in the playground with a sitting wall for parents. Both play structures and the sandbox will be shaded as a safety measure to help lower the rate of sunburns.

“The new play structures will be a fantastic addition to one of the most beautiful parks in San Marcos,” said San Marcos Community Services Director Buck Martin. “And it is opening just in time for summer!”

The San Elijo Hills Park opened in 2004 and has two baseball fields, a soccer field, a smaller playground with a splash pad and a community center that hosts a daycare for local children.

Neighborhood Reminders

It has been brought to the attention of the HOA that several children are out and about playing in and near the streets within the community. While we understand the desire to have fun outdoors, there are definitely some safer locations in the area. San Elijo Park has a playground and splash pad which is great fun on hot summer days, the playground in Questhaven Park and large grass area can be used for many types of sports and activities, and the trail system throughout San Elijo Hills can provide an opportunity to burn some energy and get some exercise without the threat of vehicles on the street. We all want to make sure the kids are enjoying their summer vacation while being as safe as possible!

Signs will go up in San Elijo Hills park to indicate smoking areas

By Linda Lou-UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

July 19, 2008

SAN MARCOS – New signs telling people where they can smoke in San Marcos parks will be going up soon.

An ordinance restricting smoking to designated areas in the parks went into effect almost two months ago, but the areas were not selected.

This week, the city’s Community Services Commission approved designated areas suggested by the city staff. Most parks will have one area, but the larger parks, such as Bradley, will have several spots. Sheriff’s deputies could ticket smokers caught puffing outside those zones. But Craig Sargent-Beach, director of community services, said fining smokers isn’t the goal. The emphasis will be on spreading the word about the new ordinance and getting smokers used to the designated areas, he said. Signs should be posted in late August, Sargent-Beach said.
