San Marcos school trustees are scheduled to vote Monday on a $3,700 contract to relocate a portable sixth-grade classroom at San Elijo Middle School to make room for new construction. The move would clear space to build a $9.5 million, two-story classroom addition on campus. The building would have 10 regular classrooms, a science laboratory/classroom and a classroom for students with severe special needs. Kathy Tanner, San Marcos Unified School District’s facilities director, said the district is waiting for final approval from the state but hopes construction could begin in March. If that happens, she said, teachers and students would be able to move into the building in January 2009. The building is needed because of enrollment growth, Tanner said. San Elijo Middle School has about 1,200 students. –From SD Union Tribune-Linda Lou
