The San Marcos Creek District specific plan – a plan that will revitalize and conserve 214 acres along San Marcos Creek and create a new smart growth downtown for the City – has been honored with two prestigious awards for its achievements in planning. The Urban Land Institute (ULI) of San Diego/Tijuana presented the City with a “Blueprint for Excellence in Smart Growth” award for the Creek District, saying the project is economically sound, environmentally friendly and supportive of community livability.
The Creek District plan was also the recipient of an award of merit for “Outstanding Planning Award for a Planning Project” by the San Diego Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA). The APA noted that the Creek District plan was a “praiseworthy endeavor.” The San Marcos Creek District will create a vibrant, pedestrian-oriented, mixed-use town center that integrates compact urban development with restored open space and creek oriented parks. The plan was developed with extensive public participation, including the formation of a San Marcos Creek District Task Force. The entire Creek District plan is available online at www.san-marcos.net.
