The City of San Marcos will host a workshop on preventing identity theft on Thursday, Oct. 23 at 7 pm. The workshop will be held in the San Marcos Community Center, 3 Civic Center Drive. It is free to attend and open to the public. The workshop will touch on how your personal information can be stolen by criminals; why this type of crime is so dangerous; and what you can do to protect your good name. Tips will also be presented for those who are recovering from identity theft. “Our goal is to arm the community with some tools to limit the harm, frustration and expense that can accompany the many types of identity scams out there,” said Veronica Martinez, who works in the City’s crime prevention unit. Deputy District Attorney Anna Winn, who is assigned to the regional fraud task force, will be the guest presenter. An on‐site shredding vehicle for document disposal will be available two hours prior to the presentation. This workshop is being held in conjunction with Identity Theft Awareness Day and is sponsored by the Identity Theft Resource Center.
