City sets targets to meet by July ’11
Council, workers discuss their goals

San Marcos is getting closer to creating long-term goals and a vision for a city by updating its general plan. But until that plan is ready, the city has set more immediate goals to tackle by July 2011. The goals are spread across many departments, including public safety, finance, sustainability, information technology, traffic management, storm-water management and community services.
On Friday, the City Council met with about a dozen key city employees who described goals they have for the next two years. The goals workshop was similar to the one that the council had in April 2007. The council is scheduled to award a contract next month to a company that will prepare the general plan update, City Manager Paul Malone said. The work, which would take about two years to complete, would cost more than $1 million.
San Marcos’ general plan, created in 1966, last went through a major revision in 1987. Critics have been urging the city to update it for years.
San Marcos, which has been the fastest-growing city in the county in recent years, now has a population of about 82,000. The general plan is a blueprint for future growth and development. The city will dip into its reserves to pay for the update and there will be ample public participation, officials said.
