San Marcos projects on the horizon
SAN MARCOS — Although the economy has drastically slowed construction activity in San Marcos, it doesn’t mean that the city is stagnant.
At a meeting this week, City Manager Paul Malone highlighted some of the upcoming projects for this year and beyond. He was invited to address members and guests of the San Marcos Economic Development Corp., a nonprofit group made up of business people, educators and community members.
Next month, the city will celebrate the opening of Double Peak Park, a mostly natural, 200-acre park with impressive views and some playground equipment in San Elijo Hills, Malone said. Construction of 19-acre Sunset Park in the west side of the city should be finished in February.
A draft environmental report for a proposed development area – about 200 acres – near Cal State San Marcos University should be released in June.
The city will oversee plans for a mixed-use development called University District. Developers would be expected to build housing, retail space, offices, hotels and conference centers.
