Co-captain Alyssa Baena rocketed a shot into the back of the net with less than a minute remaining to lift the Nomads GU11 Red team to a 1-1 tie with Scripps United last Saturday. The Nomads are now 6-0-3 in the GU11 AA-C bracket with the No. 1 spot closer in sight as they approach their final five games of the season.In Saturday’s contest, the Nomads knew for the first time what it was like to be behind after they conceded a very “lazy-goal” to United with only 10 minutes left on the clock. Baena dug down deep and charged from the midfield through three players to narrowly sidestep defeat.The Nomads team was built from scratch by the Nomad’s coaching staff, who began with the goal of providing a competitive soccer option in their community of San Elijo Hills. “We have had uphill battles with the city, with the local AYSO region and with pulling enough players together,” Nomads assistant coach Chris Fitzsimmons said.
