The City of San Marcos, in partnership with the San Marcos Sheriff’s Station and the San Marcos Unified School District, will host an important driving class for teens and parents on Tuesday, Nov. 9 at 6:30 pm. The free class will take place at San Marcos High School, 1615 San Marcos Boulevard.
The focus of the class will be on the dangers of distracted driving, which include things like texting, talking on the phone, styling hair, putting on makeup, listening to music or even eating while driving. The interactive class will address teen and parental responsibilities related to driving, risk factors for collisions, and important vehicle code sections.
Distracted driving is the number one killer of American teens. While alcohol-related accidents among teens have dropped, teenage traffic fatalities have remained unchanged because distracted driving is on the rise.
“Every year, more than 6,000 deaths occur on our nation’s freeways because of distracted driving,” explained San Marcos Sheriff Sergeant Charles Cinnamo, who is coordinating the event. “This class will help educate teens and their parents about the grave dangers of distracted driving, and will ultimately save lives by stressing the importance of paying attention while behind the wheel.”
Class space is limited and reservations are required to attend. A parent must accompany their teen driver throughout the presentation, which runs until 9 pm.
