San Marcos City Manager Paul Malone announced today that he will retire in April. This comes after serving the community for more than 30 years as a planner, assistant city manager and city manager.
“It has been my distinct pleasure to serve the residents of San Marcos over the past three decades,” said Malone. “Thanks to a series of innovative City Councils and exceptionally dedicated staff, we’ve been able to bring forward some exciting projects, programs and services during that time.”
The City Council will meet in closed session during their next meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 8 to discuss the process for recruiting Malone’s replacement.
Malone has served as city manager since 2006. He began his career with the City in 1980 after graduating from Humboldt State University with a bachelor of science degree in resource planning.
Malone worked in the planning department for more than four years as an associate planner before being promoted to administrative assistant in the city manager’s office. He was then promoted to deputy city manager and again to assistant city manager in 1990, where he served until he took over as city manager.
Malone is an avid outdoorsman and die-hard Red Sox fan. In his spare time, he enjoys fishing, backpacking and reading. He will continue to reside in San Marcos with his wife, Mary Glen, and their two sons, Connor and Evan.
