The west side of the Nordahl Road bridge over State Route 78 (SR-78) in San Marcos has opened to traffic as of 5 am this morning. Portions of the lanes will be limited during this time while construction on the bridge continues through the next few weeks.

Construction of the Nordahl Road bridge replacement project began in late February 2012. The first phase of work reconstructed the east side of the bridge. The second phase of construction to rebuild the west side of the bridge is nearing completion. The full bridge with an additional turn lane on to SR-78 will be completed in November 2012.

The Nordahl Road bridge replacement is one of several projects in the area. Working collaboratively, the cities of San Marcos and Escondido, the San Diego Association of Governments, and Caltrans are investing $41.1 million to address the congestion in the vicinity of I-15 and SR-78 and to prepare for future carpool lanes on SR-78.
