San Marcos City officials announced today that Scott Ybarrondo will take over as captain of the San Marcos Sheriff’s Station on December 28, 2012. Captain Ybarrondo has been with the sheriff’s department for more than 20 years. He worked as a deputy sheriff from 1992 to 2005; as a sheriff’s sergeant from 2005 to 2009; and as a sheriff’s lieutenant from 2009 to 2012. This is his first assignment as a sheriff’s captain.
During his tenure with the San Diego Sheriff’s Department, Captain Ybarrondo has been assigned to various areas including detention, patrol, community policing, training, background investigations, internal affairs, crisis negotiations and special investigations.
Ybarrondo’s last assignment was overseeing two narcotics task force units. In that role, Ybarrondo had overall command of 20 employees and managed a multi-million dollar federal grant targeting border-related felony crimes occurring throughout San Diego County.
Captain Ybarrondo holds several Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certificates and a bachelor of science degree in business management from the University of Phoenix. He is also a recent graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigations National Academy.
Captain Ybarrondo’s transfer to the San Marcos station comes after the former captain of the station, Mike Barnett, was assigned to sheriff’s headquarters in Kearny Mesa.
“Captain Ybarrondo is a well-respected member of the sheriff’s department and we are fortunate to have this capable lawman assigned to our City,” said City Manager Jack Griffin. “We look forward to welcoming Captain Ybarrondo to San Marcos and working with him and all the dedicated employees at the San Marcos Sheriff’s Station.”
