Sheriff Department Reminder to Beware of Utility Impostor
Water is an important part of holiday celebrations from preparing meals and keeping the house clean. Please be aware that someone is posing as a water utility worker in the North County during this busy time of year. Don’t fall for it!
On December 6th, a person representing himself as a San Dieguito Water Utility employee attempted to gain access to an Encinitas resident’s home by stating he needed to test the water pressure. The home owner requested to see official identification from the purported utility worker; the male went to his car and left.
The San Dieguito Water District says its staff will always have identification and will NEVER ASK to enter your home. All city and government employees will have official identification. If you are ever in doubt, do not open the door or allow anyone to enter your home. Call a deputy sheriff to respond and investigate suspicious circumstances or people. The San Dieguito Water District provides potable (drinking) and recycled water to over 38,000 citizens in the communities of Leucadia, Old Encinitas, Cardiff and portions of New Encinitas.
You can protect yourself from being victimized by remembering the following tips:
* Do not open the door for someone you don’t recognize. Use a peep-hole, side window, or locked security screen door.
* Request identification. City workers, utility personnel will always carry official identification.
* Request a legitimate city-issued permit from someone who is soliciting door-to-door.
* Check the vehicle to make sure it has an appropriate logo permanently displayed.
* Ask for the name and phone number of the worker’s supervisor.
* Trust your feelings; never let anyone in your home if you are uncomfortable.
When in doubt, call the Sheriff’s Department at (858) 565-5200. You can also call Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
