Double Peak School

San Marcos delays Double Peak School (Union Tribune Article from last week)

The much-anticipated Double Peak School in San Marcos won’t open in August as originally planned because of unexpected construction delays, school district officials said Tuesday (Last).

They said the delays won’t drive up the cost of the $65 million project, but that work probably won’t be completed until January. A meeting will be held with parents this week to discuss options for the coming school year.

One option includes keeping future Double Peak students at their current schools — perhaps banding them together in teaching clusters — then moving them to the new campus in the middle of the school year, said school board President Janet McClean.

Another option is to delay opening the school until August 2016, she said.

McClean said the construction delay boils down to two separate events: It has taken longer than anticipated to get the state to sign off on modifications to Double Peak’s design, and to get easements from landowners whose property abuts the 36-acre school site. The school is being built with fees the district collected from developers in the master-planned community of San Elijo Hills, where 3,000 homes have been built over the past 15 years and roughly 200 more are in the pipeline.
