Resource center to open to help region’s growing senior citizen population
Facility is a comprehensive resource dedicated to improving senior citizens’ quality of life
San Marcos, CA – A valuable new resource for senior citizens, their caregivers and families will be available in North County with the opening of The Foundation for Senior Wellbeing’s Information Resource Center. Located at 131 Richmar Avenue in the Panorama Teen and Family Center in San Marcos, the new center will connect seniors to resources in the areas of housing, home repair, transportation, food insecurity, emergency assistance, medical and mental health issues, legal issues and more.
A formal grand opening and ribbon-cutting celebration is planned for Thursday, July 14 at 4 p.m. and will include refreshments, an open house and comments from several regional dignitaries. The celebration is open to the public.
In making the grand opening announcement, the center’s Program Manager Rebecca Steiner stated, “Four out of every 10 seniors in San Diego County are struggling. Our senior population will more than double in the next 15 years – a rate three times faster than the general population – and half of seniors say that isolation is negatively affecting their lives. Additionally, many seniors lack the financial resources to afford housing and other basic needs. The Foundation for Senior Wellbeing is determined to change those statistics, and this new Information Resource Center is a major part of that effort.”
The center will direct callers to available resources and, unlike other referral services, will follow up with clients to ensure their question or issue is resolved to their satisfaction. In order to serve those who do not use computers or social media, this information will also be available by phone or in person and provided by staff or volunteers trained to communicate with seniors using patience and listening skills to research and recommend suitable resources.
