Bike Permit Required for both E-Bikes & Bicycles beginning 1/8/24

In a proactive move to prioritize student safety, San Elijo Middle School (SEMS) has announced the launch of a new initiative—the SEMS Bike Permit Program. Aimed at promoting responsible biking habits and enhancing safety education, the program is set to commence on January 8, 2023.

The program targets students who ride e-bikes or regular bikes, acknowledging the developmental stage of young adolescents who are learning the value of responsibility and independence.

Key Features of the SEMS Bike Permit Program:

  1. Educational Safety Courses:
    • Students are required to complete one of two safety courses—either an in-person e-bike/bike safety course through the City of Carlsbad on November 4 or December 9, or an online safety course at SEMS on specified dates.
  2. Contract Signing:
    • Upon completion of the course, students and parents will sign a contract, a crucial step in reinforcing the importance of responsible biking.
  3. Permit Distribution:
    • Evidence of course completion and the signed contract must be presented at the permit distribution dates on November 30 and December 14 at 2:45 pm in front of the teacups.

What the Permit Entails: The SEMS Bike Permit is a small sticker that will be affixed to the student’s bike, helmet, and ID card. This visual identifier will help distinguish SEMS students within the community and on campus.

Importance of the Permit: The introduction of the Bike Permit Program underscores SEMS’s commitment to the safety and well-being of its students. By requiring students to undergo safety education, agree to ride safely in the community, use legally compliant e-bikes, and wear appropriate helmets, SEMS aims to instill a culture of responsibility among its biking community.

Community Cooperation: SEMS administration has expressed gratitude for the cooperation and support of parents and students in ensuring the success of the Bike Permit Program. For any inquiries or assistance, parents are encouraged to contact SEMS administrators at 760-290-2803.

As San Elijo Middle School continues to prioritize safety, the SEMS Bike Permit Program stands as a testament to the school’s commitment to fostering responsible habits among its students.
