Protect Your Pets with Our Spring Parasite Fling!
There is no doubt that spring has sprung in San Diego, bringing green grasses and colorful flowers to our beautiful county. Many of us are taking advantage of this season to enjoy the outdoors, and our pets are often included.
Unfortunately, the warmer weather also brings with it increasing parasite activity. Mosquitos, fleas, ticks, and even internal parasites become more problematic this time of year, and these pests can cause very serious medical problems.
Common Springtime Pets and Their Risks:
Heartworm: This dangerous parasitic disease is slowly on the rise in San Diego and neighboring counties. Heartworm Larva is carried by mosquitos, which are becoming increasingly populous as weather conditions change. Heartworm disease is often fatal if not treated quickly. Luckily, this dangerous disease is completely preventable with simple, safe preventative medication.
Fleas: Early spring is prime time for fleas. These blood sucking parasites multiply quickly in warmer weather and can cause itching, allergies, and even anemia in affected pets. In addition, they can carry tapeworms and certain harmful bacteria.
Ticks: Ticks have become an exceedingly common parasite in San Diego County. Like fleas, ticks feed on pets’ blood, and are known to carry very serious chronic diseases such as Ehlichiosis and Lyme Disease. As these diseases are not uncommon in San Diego County, it is recommended that dogs be tested annual for exposure.
Internal Parasites: As pets increase their outdoor time, their exposure to internal parasites, such as roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms, also goes up. These parasites can cause digestive issues, weight loss, and anemia, along with other health problems.
Keeping Your Pet Safe:
Disease Screening: It is recommended that dogs be screened annually for Heartworm, Tick Borne diseases (Lyme, Ehrlichia, and Anaplasmosis), and internal parasites, even if the pet is on preventative medication. Early diagnosis of these diseases can lead to much faster, more successful treatment outcomes.
Start Preventative Treatments Now: Regular flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives are an essential part of pet care in our area. There are many safe and effective options available, including combination products such as Simparica Trio that safely protect against fleas, ticks, heartworms, and internal parasites.
Check Your Pet: Be sure to inspect your pet regularly for fleas and ticks. This is especially important after you and your pet enjoy time outside. Be sure to check under the ear flap, between toes, deep within the coat, and under the tail!
Keep Your Home Clean: Regular vacuuming, washing pets’ bedding, and keeping your yard tidy can help keep flea and tick populations under control.
Prevent Mosquito Overpopulation: Reduce standing water such as seasonal pools, bird baths, and open outdoor containers. These can be breeding grounds for mosquitos, which can increase the risk of heartworm transmission to your pets and other pets in the area.
