The San Elijo Hills Community Association is hosting a FREE showing of Illumination Nation’s Minions (rated PG) as part of our summer movie showings!

Evolving from single-celled yellow organisms at the dawn of time, Minions live to serve, but find themselves working for a continual series of unsuccessful masters, from T. Rex to Napoleon. Without a master to grovel for, the Minions fall into a deep depression. But one minion, Kevin, has a plan; accompanied by his pals Stuart and Bob, Kevin sets forth to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow. Their search leads them to Scarlet Overkill, the world’s first-ever super-villainess.

Minions will be shown on Friday, June 3rd at the lower softball field of San Elijo Park. Pre-show activities (including bounce houses, bungee run, a sticky wall and more!) will begin at 6:00PM and the movie will start at sunset (around 8:00PM). Remember to bring your low-back beach chairs and blankets for lawn seating! A few food trucks will be there and will have a variety of food & refreshments for purchase.

Road work continues along San Elijo Road to pave way for Double Peak School Traffic reduced to single lanes until late August

Beginning Monday, May 16, traffic will be reduced to one lane on both north- and southbound sides along San Elijo Road and S. Twin Oaks Valley Road to accommodate roadway improvements critical to student, pedestrian, bicycle and traffic safety while paving the way for future access to the new Double Peak School.

Motorists traveling through the area will see signs in advance of the roadwork and should be prepared to be directed through standard traffic control measures.

During the construction period, pedestrians will be routed to the trail on the west side of S. Twin Oaks Valley Road and bicyclists will be accommodated in a striped bike lane.  Additionally, access to Ridgeline Trailhead and the equestrian park east of Duncan Court will be restricted to right-turn only.

Roadway safety improvements associated with the construction of Double Peak School include extended turning lanes into the school site from both directions that will result in widening of the road, relocation of the center median, relocation of major utility infrastructure and the installation of traffic safety improvements such as traffic signals and crosswalks at the intersection into the school.

Although two-way traffic will be maintained within the work area, traffic delays are anticipated and motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes if possible. A detailed construction and traffic impact map will be available on the City’s website, www.san-marcos.net/roadwork.

All lane closures are expected to be lifted before the end of August 2016. Delays in the schedule may occur due to inclement weather conditions.

While these scheduled traffic impacts may cause short-term inconvenience, the work paves the way for long-term improvements to traffic flow and will provide access enhancements to the new Double Peak School that are critical to student and motorist safety.

Double Peak School, San Marcos Unified’s first K-8, will serve the communities in and around San Elijo Hills and offer a focus on music, arts and innovation. The highly anticipated grand opening will coincide with the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year.

For more information regarding the associated lane closures, please contact San Marcos Unified School District’s project contractor Mike Gussa with Lusardi Construction at (760) 497-3097 or mgussa@lusardi.com.

For more information about Double Peak School, please contact Administrative Secretary Jenny Axford at (760) 752-1227 or jenny.axford@smusd.org.

Following is a list of important announcements and upcoming events for The San Elijo Hills Community Association (HOA):

Movie Night July 10th

The San Elijo Hills Community Association is hosting a FREE showing of Paddington (rated PG) as part 2 of our summer movie series!

From the beloved novels by Michael Bond and producer David Heyman (Harry Potter), Paddington tells the story of the comic misadventures of a young Peruvian bear (voiced by Ben Whishaw) who travels to London in search of a home. Finding himself lost and alone, he begins to realize that city life is not all he had imagined – until he meets the kindly Brown family who read the label around his neck that says “Please look after this bear. Thank you,” and offer him a temporary haven. It looks as though his luck has changed until this rare talking bear catches the eye of a museum taxidermist (Nicole Kidman).

Paddington will be shown on Friday, July 10th at the upper sports field (Hilltop Field) of San Elijo Park. Pre-show activities (including bounce houses, a sticky wall and more!) will begin at 6:00PM and the movie will start at sunset (around 8:00PM). Remember to bring your low-back beach chairs and blankets for lawn seating!

A few food trucks will be there, and will have a variety of food (including yummy pizza!), & refreshments for purchase. A portion of the food truck proceeds benefit the San Elijo Hills Foundation.

Community Reminders

Keep our yards looking their best! During the on-going drought and reduced watering times, owners must continue to maintain their yard areas by mowing, weeding, trimming, and pruning.
Did you know that there are many great alternatives to grass? Why not consider gardening with native plants. You can bring the beauty of California into your own landscaping while also receiving numerous benefits. There are flowers, grasses, shrubs, vines, and trees for any situation. If you are interested in modifying your current design, you must submit the necessary application and plans for review and approval by the Architectural Committee. Questions? Please contact Liz McCardle at 760-798-9015.
Homeowners are encouraged to park all cars in the garage first, driveway second, and then in the street after all garage and driveway spaces are occupied.

During the summer months when the kiddos are out and about, please remember to encourage them to stay out of the streets and to be considerate to the surrounding homes with respect to noise and play equipment.
San Elijo Hills Foundation Pace Car Campaign

The PACE Car Campaign was originally triggered by a long-time resident of San Elijo Hills. Her idea stemmed from the concept of PACE Cars and how they help set the pace during a race.
-What if every resident was driving the speed limit in SEH?
-How would that affect the pace of traffic through the community?
-Can we as residents help set the pace in SEH?

Let’s find out! By building on this PACE Car concept & getting residents to commit to being vigilant about the traffic limits around our community, we believe, together, we can create a culture of safety in SEH.

Anyone who lives in SEH is encouraged to TAKE THE PACE PLEDGE. In exchange for your pledge, the SEH Foundation will provide you with a special SEH PACE Car sticker for your car window. Not only will seeing this sticker remind you to drive the speed limit, it will also serve as a moving billboard that reminds others around you to consider doing the same.

To take the pledge, please visit the SEH Foundation Website: http://sanelijohillsfoundation.weebly.com/pace-car-campaign.html.
You may also visit the San Elijo Hills Foundation Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/SanElijoHillsFoundation
* The San Elijo Hills Community Association supports the individual action by community members to address issues that affect us all, however, as a reminder, the streets within the community are public and under the purview of the City of San Marcos. The Association has no direct enforcement ability with regard to speeding, parking, or other traffic related concerns”

San Elijo Hills Events

You may be wondering why all recent events have been scheduled for the upper Hilltop field. The City of San Marcos has required all of our events are located on the Hilltop (most upper field) as a result of damage to the ball fields. Based on concerns by local organizations, the fields have been off limits so that the turf has time to “heal.” The Association is making every effort possible to schedule future events at the ball fields.

Water Restrictions Effective June 1st

On May 20, 2015, Vallecitos’ Board of Directors adopted emergency drought restrictions under Ordinance 195 that limits all outdoor irrigation, excluding certified agricultural or commercial growers, during the months of June through October to 2 unassigned days per week/8 minutes per station. If demands are not reduced by 24%, additional enforcement may be needed and the District may need to reduce watering to 1 assigned day per week.

Please remember to keep your yard weed free and maintained to ensure our community continues to look its best!
